Gila River Memorial Airport is a public airport located in the city of Sacaton, Arizona, USA. It has a single runway which is 7,150 feet long and 100 feet wide. The airport serves both general aviation and military aviation purposes.
The airport was initially built for military use during World War II, but after the war ended, the army returned the base to the Pima Indian tribe who owned the land. Later in 1948, the Indian tribe established the Gila River Indian Community and developed the airport for civilian use.
Today, the airport primarily serves as a hub for air ambulance services and provides important medical transportation services for the surrounding communities. Additionally, Gila River Memorial Airport serves as a gorgeous stopover for private and commercial aviation.
While the airport doesn't have any commercial airlines operating, there are plenty of private charters and general aviation users using this airport frequently.
